"I said it was my practice saber, didn't I? What makes you think I keep mine at the Padawan-training level? That thing can and will do serious damage to both property and people. And it will deflect and reflect blaster bolts. You're keeping the vest on, and not just because of the protection, but because that's precisely what everybody else out there will be wearing. The lack of obvious difference keeps you safe, but it also doesn't mean you're being marked out for special treatment. Enjoy the extra pocket space."
She took a deep breath, and looked up at the ceiling, finally tracking down an example from her own experience.
"A well-timed Force Push is just as likely to trigger the mechanism on a detonator the crazy is holding as insurance against you doing just that, keeping a few thousand non-Jedi trapped as hostages. You don't always know they're crazy until they open fire - or if they're using droids as suicide bombers, you're even worse off. Council can't oversee what they don't know arrives, which is another good reason to have patrols out here, watching for people who choose to avoid spaceports. Besides. I got all the way to Council chambers without being stopped once, without being asked for identification, without even signing in at the gate. I know very well I'm nearly a complete unknown at Temple now, yet I still got that far in. And I'm still not sure if Council even realises that I'm here - though I deliberately left enough of a trail for them to follow if they wanted, just as you did."

There was no winning with her it seemed, like most adults. He simply nodded and glanced down at the lightsaber wondering if it really was any different. “Shouldn’t we be out patrolling now? We’ve been here for a while.”

Mez smiled, and holstered the vibroblades on the back of her vest, opening the door with her foot, holding her own shieldplates in one hand and clicking her vest into place with the other. Jace was at least responsible.
"West gate. Come on."

He followed her without a word and stretched out with the Force as best he could. He doubted he'd sense anyone before she did but if they were going on patrol he might as well act the part to the fullest.

She could feel the faint tingle of Jace stretching out with his senses, just like he'd been doing in class earlier, and smiled, tightening her plates with one hand and teeth. He'd be far more likely to pick up something than she was at any distance.
One thumbprint scan and they were outside, the door sliding shut firmly behind them.
"Reesa had to go home. Sorry we're late. My fault. Who's got point tonight?"

Jace wasn't entirely sure what he should be doing so he simply stood at his Master's side.

Mez glanced up from her datapad, which she'd managed to grab out of one of her vest pockets. "Jace, say hi. Get to know them. They'll not bite."

He nodded and started to make his rounds. For the most part the guards seemed nice but there were a few who questioned him being here although not openly. It probably wasn’t very trusting of him to go peeking about in their thoughts but it was a good exercise all the same. When he’d finished introducing himself he made his way back to Mez. “They seem like a nice enough bunch.”

"They are. No peeking into their thoughts unless there's active trouble." She looked back down at her datapad, then out to the forest.
"Close your eyes. Surroundings analysis."

He ignored the scolding and turned his attention to the forest. He felt two presences out there but the way they were moving suggested they were guards on patrol. Besides the two of them he felt lesser presences in the Force which he knew were animals. “Just two guards and a bunch of wildlife out there.”

"Beyond that?"
The readout on her datapad had a few thermal hotspots out beyond the forest; could be animals, but they were a bit too large, and they didn't usually get ones that big out of the forest without a reason. Could be poachers. Could be anything. But her own senses couldn't extend that far, and Jace's could.
Besides which, it would give him the confidence he needed in his own skills to ask.

He closed his eyes and concentrated, searching for anything beyond his initial look. It took him a moment to find them but when he did he opened his eyes and looked at her.
“There’s one other person out there that I can make out but when I tried to get a better feel they disappeared.”
One someone disappeared in the Force that generally meant another Force user. There should only be Jedi on Ossus but why would a Jedi hide themselves?
“It wasn’t a particularly strong presence but if they can mask themselves that doesn’t mean much.”

Mez pulled out her comlink in silence and relayed Jace's words, then handed Jace her spare.
"Well done. Fastest route is through the forest, safest is around the outskirts of it. Silent so as not to spook whoever it is means we're skipping the swoops for now. Speed or safety, Jace?"
Speed or safety, Padawan Fie'r? Safety from what, Master?

He took the comlink from her and put it in the pocket of his robe. His heart was beating faster than normal and he slowed his breathing to calm himself. It wasn’t out of fear, a Jedi did not fear after all, it was out of excitement. Jace had always loved a good mystery, which was one of the many reasons he’d sought Mez in the first place. He looked up at her as she spoke and thought about the question.
“Safety, I don’t know why a Jedi would hide themselves but maybe they’re scared and if we rush in there they might take off and then we’ll never find them.” He also thought about the possibility that it was a Dark Jedi or even a Sith but either of those was highly unlikely.

She nodded, and spoke quietly into her comlink for a few seconds; discussing flanking maneouvers, warning of the likelihood of their intruder being Force Sensitive enough to be capable of using powers actively rather than uncontrolled and passive.
"Okay. We've got point, the others will come along in a pincer if needed. Shall we?"
