Avery would have done better to continue staring out the window. Her intercession was enough for elicited only venom, as Taaru spat vitriol like daggers through narrowed eyes.
"A man of my intellect understands big picture, and understands statistics. Human captain is less likely to have conflict of interest due to sociocultural and racial background. Human captain is also more predictable, more controllable, and produces better results from human majority crew. Better chance of success, lower chance of betrayal."
He closed the file and tossed it back at Jet, but continued with Avery.
"And furthermore, I advise you never lecture a Thruvaran on multiculturalism. My people have sacrifice and lost too much in the spirit of altruism for spoiled children to pretend to be our betters."
To Jet: "You have already chosen her, and showing me the file is merely a formality. I know you well enough. Make your choice, but know I vill be watching this Aralie, and that the some of my countrymen may take issue with a twi'lek captain when the time comes to drop."

Jet had known this would be somwhat of an issue - she ad afterall been working with Taaru for quite some time and was well aware of his...quirks. Jet had prejudices of her own - perhaps not against Twi'leks...but they were there and would surface from time to time.
She caught the file with one hand when Taaru tossed it towards her..or perhaps threw would be a better word, opening her jacket she tucked it back into the inner pocket she had previously pulled it from. Her gaze glanced at Avery with a slight shake of the head - it would be better if she let Taaru's harsh words drop to continue this argument would do nothing but anger him further, and although she was not the touchy comforting sort...prefering to lay hands on people only when issuing violence she made an exception in this case patting Taaru lightly on the shoulder.
"You can direct your countrymens complaints to me...I shall tell them exactly what I tell you now old friend...that your feelings, strong as they may be, are worth less to me then ensuring you survive so that you may continue having them."
And it was true...though she cared not a wit about his countrymen personally, they were important to Taaru and as he was important to her then she would ensure thier survival as best she could. and that ment having the best she could spare captain thier voyage. moving away she returned to her chair picking up and reassembling the blaster she had abandoned a few moments before, before continueing.
"She will follow orders...and follow them well, but to sooth your anxiety i have appointed an equally efficient human XO capable of stepping in at any time shoud you feel it necessary. He is good..but she is better."

Taaru raked his fingers through his hair, a clear sign that he didn't want to continue this discussion either. Jet's uncharacteristic warmth also helped to knock some of the fight out of him, and he sank back into his seat.
"I vill inform my friend Miko that he and the rest of the delegation may meet us shortly before departure. It vould not serve to be housing Thruvarans at the mansion for a few days. First, because you probably value your carpeting, Jet. And second, it vould arouse suspicion. There is no need to outfit them either. Aside from starvipers, they vill be fully equipped, and we can let the rest of the ship's crew assume that we've hired mercenaries, since we don't vant to spare any of our commando teams."
Taaru paused, a forgotten thought creeping back into his head.
"Also...ship needs new name. Experimental period is over, and eet vill require rechristening before operations begins."

She bristled as Taaru began to lecture her and immediately question her character. She turned her head to look at him, eyes narrowing and her muscles tensing. She was about to get up when Jet showed a sense of sympathy and Taaru relaxed once again. She, taking that lead, also relaxed back into the cushions and stared up at the ceiling. Vulgar words scanned passed in mumbled thoughts, but she never uttered them aloud. It was clear she was here to do one thing and one thing only. She was meant to de-code, and that was it. No other thoughts would be issued. And frankly, as the time pressed on she was growing tired and impatient with Taaru and really had no interest in speaking with him past job-related topics.
At this point, she wished he would jump off something very, very, very tall.

Jet found Avery's actions slightly amusing, she wondered what exactly she had planned on doing to Taaru - and for a brief second wished she had let things continue just for fun. But that would not get them any closer to leaving. No it had been better to disperse the antogonism for now.
Leaning back she slung her arms across the back of the chair and absently twirled the blaster. Nodding slightly in regards to Taaru's plans, they were fine with her, she would speak with Devlin to ensure all the supplies were loaded.
"And do either of you have any ideas as to this name? Unless the ships are part of my personal battlegroup I tend to let the crews name them...inspires more pride and comraderie in the ship, but in this case perhaps it deserves something more."

If Taaru had bothered to extend a tendril of perception in Avery's direction, he may have registered her growing animosity. But he was too flustered himself to devote any concentration to it, and even if he had it, he wouldn't have bothered. Avery was going to have to learn what kind of person he was, and come to accept it, just like Jet had. He was unapologetic about his character: As long as the objective was satisfied, he was content with himself.
Self-reflection in a person that had done the things he had done, seen the things he'd seen, was not only perilous, but could turn out to be deadly. People depended on him, and he wasn't about to let socially-constructed ethical dilemmas divert him from that.
And if Avery never came around...so be it. He could stomach a several month mission on the same ship with people that hated him. He understood basic leadership, and knew enough that all he'd have to do was put Miko between him and her. Miko's personality, some would say, was an infinite improvement over his own in sociability.
Again, he turned to Jet, who wore a little, nigh imperceptible grin, which let him know that she was finding this all amusing. Naturally...Jet would.
"I am fond of tradition, and if crews receive sense of ownership from naming ship themselves, I see no need to change it. Denying them what all others have would be detrimental to morale."

She shrugged lightly and crossed her arms behind her head.
"Whatever you want to do, Jet. We just need to get this whole thing going. I don't want to lose much time."
She looked at Collin, sending a quick order his way to grab a file off her desk. As he retrieved it, she unfolded her arms from behind her neck and slipped on her glasses just in time to pluck the folder from his arm and open it up.

Jet eyed the both of them with an arched brow, Avery seemed to be escaping into her work...and Taaru remained oblivious, by choice or instinct who knew, possibly a combination of both. This was going to be an amazingly fun trip..Jet could already tell. Not her problem she decided and chuckled slightly.
"They are being choosen to partake in private mission with myself, a Corellian hero and his mysterious cohort...I don't think I could lower thier morale if I told them they had to man the ship in thier underware."
She stated wryly, since the people being choosen were up and comers for the most part they were seeing this as an opportunity to prove themselves and advance thier careers - at the very least despite being told the mission objective was on a need to know basis and they were being kept in the dark Devlin had told her they were quite excited by it none the less.
"So if you have any ideas spit them out, I'll add them to whatever the crew comes up with and they can be voted on with the rest."

He mulled it over, stroking a be-stubbled chin.
"In Thruvaran literary tradition, there is story about certain doctor who wagered soul with Devil for ultimate knowledge and transcendence, knowing full well that Devil would never be able to deliver. Devil WASN'T able to deliver, but the dear doctor caught a glimpse of transcendence, more than anyone before him, before he died of technicality in bargain.
This expedition may be futile. Vee get there, and there is nothing. But we may also get glimpse of something greater....I propose vee name ship after Dr. Faustus."

"Simplify it to 'Faustus' and I think it's good."
She never looked up from her pages, but she did pause her reading for a moment to reposition her glasses.

Jet to be honest didn't much care what the ship was to be named, she had hundreds of ships and coming up with unique names for each got to be tiring after a while - it was yet another reason she had foisted it off on the crews - the fact that they gleaned some sort of morale from the exercise was just a nice by-product. So while she wasn't entirely fond of 'Faustus' she wasn't necessarily opposed to it either.
"Very well then, 'Faustus' is fine I'll have Devlin handle the crew vote, he keeps pestering me about a meeting anyways, it'll just give him an excuse to actually come and find me."

"Then eet is settled."
Taaru stood, adjusting the sweater he was wearing to stave off the Corellian winter, and unclipped his commlink from its belt pouch.
"Miko and the Thruvaran delegation are due to arrive in the next couple of hours. I'll let you know when they do..."
He punched in a frequency as he walked out the room, and the sound of spoken Thruvaran could be dimly heard as he returned to his room on the opposite side of the mansion.

Jet nodded to Taaru as he walked out - already on the comm and then spared a glance at Avery who still seemed to be diligently working on whatever it was that had gotten her attention, shrugging to herself she copied taaru's dissapearing act and left herself...Devlin was on his way to meet with her in any case.

She didn't look up when Taaru left, or even when Jet was leaving as well, but once Jet was on the verge of walking out the room, Avery let out a quiet, "See you."
The fact of the matter was Avery was engrossed in work. Partially due to Taaru's general douchery and partially because suddenly work was becoming very interesting. She stood, moving to her desk as she splayed out her papers so they were all side by side.
Collin beeped cautiously as Avery's pen scratched quietly.

Avery had fallen asleep in bed, which was actually a bit of a change- seeing as she usually crashed out on her desk and usually woke up to find her forehead covered in ink from her notes. But the bed was a nice change of pace. Things had- for the most part slowed down for awhile. Even Collin was powered down in a corner and if he could, he would probably be enjoying the silence and lack of chaotic events.
She had crashed out on top of the sheets, enjoying the coolness of the air brush up against the skin on her exposed legs or arms. Her fingers twitched a bit in her sleep and she mumbled incoherently under her breath. She woke with a start and jolted up, looking around from side to side in panic before realizing where she was.
"Oh..."
She laid back again, watching the ceiling so absolutely nothing as she tried to go back to sleep- However, she found herself unable to fall back into it. Eventually she got up and went into her bathroom to brush her teeth and try to shake off the tired feeling.
