A long time ago...in a forum far far away...
A small group of people started something which would become near and dear to many more. From deep within the Miscellaneous Forums of Star Wars.com emerged a rampant flurry of posters known as Role-players. Though I was not around at this time..I have tracked the date to somewhere between 1999 and 2000.
At the time of course the role playing was sporadic and unorganized, but even in this atmosphere characters evolved and legacy's began. It was the beginning of FSC and like all things it's birth was a chaotic one.
In the beginning there were but two factions. The good and the bad, The Jedi and The Sith. And for a while this was enough and while battles waged between our two factions so too did it cause disturbances within the StarWars.com Community.
After only a short time it was declared by the mods that Role playing belonged not in the Miscellaneous Forums but in the Role playing Forums despite the fact that said forums were originally created for Tabletop discussions.
And so our wayward groups of role players were moved to a new location - and in this new place flourished. It was here in the depths of the Role playing forum that FSC truly began to take shape. The factions grew to include the Imperials, The Alliance, The Vong and the DJO.
the number of Role players skyrocketed and within a short time the post count per day was well into the thousands, threads moved like wildfire during prime time, sift enough that even the hardiest of RPers had trouble keeping up.
It was in this time too that order began to be established, while the rules were not written as they are now it was commonly accepted that powerplaying and godmodding was not to be tolerated. Even the groups themselves began to organize - leaders were crowned, alliances were struck and storylines took on a whole new complexity. Characters lived, died and became legends in these early years which even to this day are not forgotten. some were good, others were bad but they all shaped the story of FSC.
Before long the post count on the Role playing boards began to have an effect on the servers of StarWars.com it was not uncommon for the boards to die in the middle of prime posting time or to slow to an unearthly crawl as players tried furiously to gain ground in storylines and spontaneous RP. It was in this golden age of Role play that I became part of the community and despite the troublesome boards we lumbered on, sometimes in peace and other times in fury..but non the less we posted.
Our happy if troublesome life at StarWars.com however was brought to an end one terror filled day as the Forums mods descended upon our small group - first they insisted we regulate the number of threads to a certain few (it seems our wayward Rp was drowning out the Tabletop threads). We did so..and gladly for it meant that despite being relegated to a few locations we could still live our StarWars lives.
The Jedi Council Room, Planet of Ossus, Jedi training Room, Sith Palace, Korriban, The Tea Room, Vades Shop, The Contagiously Convoluted Cantina. The Nerf Farm, as well as a few Imperial, Vong and Galactic Alliance threads were spared this cut-back and we played on.
Even this however did not fix the problems were were causing StarWars.com and it was eventually decided we must leave our happy home. At first this seemed a dismal sentence, tossed out from the place we loved our characters and the lives they led soon to be forgotten.
But it was not to be so, A moderator by the name of DesignSith felt pity for us and our plight and in her own spare time created for us a sanctuary. A place were we could continue our Role playing without causing more trouble for our beloved parent site.
She choose MSN boards and in August 2002 FSCrp was born. From Starwars.Com : Role playing. Here we were given the freedom we had lost at StarWars.com, moderators were appointed each faction given their own boards and creativity flourished. It was not long before we had several hundred active members posting daily.
By this time many of us had been talking outside the boards for quite some time, plotting and planning future and current storylines with abandon. Of course as always happens with large groups of people disagreements arose. FSC was rocked with several large arguments one of which led to a hacking scandal in which all members but the managers were banned from the group.
Those managers spent hours that night unbanning and reappointing mods so that the influx of returning characters could be handled, rumor spread like wildfire but it soon became evident who had been behind the scandal. Those people were banned and of course continued to cause trouble, starting their own sites - offshoots of FSC that as far as I know continue to thrive in their own worlds.
FSC' numbers fell, but a core group continued onward and we were happy in our close knit community, activity would spark and then fade as people grew up..became busy but never forgot and always came back as they could. Story lines took longer to culminate..but continued. Friendships that went beyond the boards had been forged, FSC was where we could always go to catch up with one another, where our characters waited for us and were only to happy to let us dictate their often turbulent lives once more.
Disaster struck once more however with an Announcement from MSN groups, they would be closing their door in February 2009 and after much panicked messaging it became clear that the offered alternative of Multiply.com would not suit our needs. It would however make a good archive - to store the history of FSC while we the players created a new home and new future here on Proboards.
At the time of this writing the proboards site is well on its way to completion. Story's have been planned and our virtual star wars lives continue. It is with great hope that we all look to wards this future and wait with welcoming arms the return of friends still missing. They will come...when life allows. FSC is a phenomenon not easily stopped and never forgotten by those who have participated in its long and sometimes grueling history, it is the culmination of not only our collaborative stories..but our friendships and even our lives. Through FSC we have found friendship, love, humor, shared our experiences and yes even sometimes learned to hate. it has been a long road traveled..and hopefully their is yet a long ways still to go.
