Faction Orientation: Galactic Federation of Free Alliances (GA)
Located at galactic coordinates (0,0,0), Coruscant is the center of the galaxy. An enormous city of skyscrapers that literally spans the entire planet and breaches kilometers into the air, and the sun's glow on the buildings can be seen from space. Airborne traffic lanes are erected across the globe, with speeders and air taxis regularly hovering kilometers above the ground to shuttle an enormously diverse population about the world. Ship yards grace some districts of the planet, while nightclubs and dangerous places on the dark surface can be found in the Entertainment district.
For a thousand generations Coruscant has been central to galactic affairs. In ancient times the prehistoric Taungs and the Battalions of Zhell waged war for control of the beautiful world. Millennia later, it was universally understood that whoever controlled Coruscant controlled the galaxy.
Countless years of civilization have indelibly changed Coruscant's ecology. The planet is actually colder than what humans would normally deem comfortable; immense orbital mirrors warm its upper and lower latitudes by refocusing and distributing stellar energy. The planet's heat is regulated by thousands of strategically placed CO² reactive dampers in the upper atmosphere. Coruscant's water network melts polar ice and pipes the water across the planet. The city's huge amount of sewage and refuse are blasted into space, targeted toward Coruscant's sun.
In a world encased in artifice, gregarious indigenous and transplanted wildlife has nonetheless prospered. Hawk-bats and granite slugs dwell in the urban jungle, and the lower depths of Coruscant are filled with frighteningly unwholesome creatures that have evolved deprived of sunlight.
When the Empire came to power, Imperial agents worked tirelessly to wipe away vestiges of the Old Republic. During the height of the Galactic Civil War, the planet was renamed Imperial Center. The Jedi Temple was no more. The Galactic Senate was disbanded, and the Imperial Palace became the largest structure to mark Coruscant's surface.
Despite such sweeping changes in policy and infrastructure, the shadows of Coruscant remained largely unchanged. The city-planet was home to the largest criminal syndicate in the galaxy -- Black Sun -- and its ruling prince, Xizor, called Coruscant his home.
Following the defeat of the Empire at the Battle of Endor, the Rebel Alliance --now the New Republic -- made the capture of Coruscant of paramount priority. The elite Alliance special missions force and starfighter unit, Rogue Squadron, spearheaded the stab into the Core Worlds. A cunning plan allowed the Rogues to retake Coruscant with its planetary shields intact and with acceptable collateral damage.
Over the next few years, the New Republic set up government on Coruscant. They moved the capital to the old Imperial Palace, and reinstated senatorial rule. Plagued by Imperial warlords, the New Republic experienced daunting growing pains as it tried to rebuild the galaxy that Palpatine had oppressed for so long.
In a shocking strike, Imperials rallied by Grand Admiral Thrawn's failed bid to recapture Coruscant staged a devastating attack on the capital. Abandoning Thrawn's elegant tactics, these Imperials struck without compunction. Vast stretches of Coruscant's surface were laid to waste in the battle. The New Republic retreated from Coruscant, leaving the splintering Imperial factions to war amongst themselves.
When the Imperial Civil War fizzled out, the New Republic again set to rebuilding the damage the Empire had caused. Using immense construction droids, the Republic was able to clear the rubble and erect new buildings on Coruscant's surface. Since that time, the New Republic faced insurrections and repeated Imperial harassment, yet Coruscant had weathered such tests.
It did not survive, however, the conquest by the Yuuzhan Vong. The inexorable incursion of the invading aliens had targeted the heart of the Core Worlds. Despite the best efforts of the beleaguered New Republic and Luke Skywalker's new Jedi order, the aliens conquered Coruscant.
The Yuuzhan Vong started "Vongforming" after taking the planet. Massive dovin basals actually shifted Coruscant's orbit, bringing it closer to its sun. Its temperature increased, and more moisture was released into the atmosphere. Coruscant's three smaller moons were steered away while the largest was pulverized by tidal stress created by pulses from other yammosk-linked dovin basals. A refined appplication of similar techniques organized the resultant mass of dust and gravel and lumps of hardening magma into a thick spreading ring-disk of rubble that rotated around the planet at an angle 17 degrees from the ecliptic. The planet's surface is was overgrown by organic vegetation and living forms, slowly digesting the millennia of construction that had enveloped the world.
The Galactic Alliance eventually retook Coruscant from the Yuuzhan Vong during the Liberation of Coruscant. The Galactic Alliance and the Yuuzhan Vong then signed a peace treaty in 29 ABY, thus ending the Yuuzhan Vong War and not long after terminated the Yuuzhan Vong Empire and the Peace Brigade. It was decided that Coruscant would be rebuilt as the capital of the Galactic Alliance, returning to the ecumenopolis-style whenever possible while leaving the Yuuzhan Vong terraforming wherever it was as yet unfeasible to change. The World Brain would still remain in the Senate Building, as there was as yet no way to remove it without causing further damage to the planet.
As the government transferred back to the world from Denon in 30 ABY, additional new buildings were constructed, such as the new Senate building, Executive building, and Defense Force headquarters, thus the Galactic Alliance had officially taken authority of the Galaxy. In 35 ABY, a New Jedi Temple was also constructed. A large park called Unity Green was also constructed to symbolize the treaty between the Yuuzhan Vong and the Galactic Alliance.
Recent History
During the Second Yuuzhan Vong War Coruscant was once again a main target for its strategic placement. Under the leadership of Warmaster Shai ,the Vong laid waste once again to the city world. In the years that followed the Vong continued to reinforce the planets defenses until no one dared attack. It wasn't until the defeat of the main forces at Corellia that the stronghold on Coruscant weakened. As the galaxy once again joined its self together to fight a common foe the Second Yuuzhan Vong War came to an end.
A year later the Galactic Alliance decided to finally reoccupy Coruscant, the only problem was they had little to no man power left. Chief of State Xero requested the help of the entire galaxy to transform Coruscant back to its former glory. The first thing that was in order was to clear to the planet of all former Vong life. Chief Xero enlisted the help of Jet Al'Meara, leader of the DJO, and Jak Mortac, former owner of Kuat Drive Yards, for this endeavor .For the next few weeks hundreds of ships orbited Coruscant and bombarded the planet until nothing was left alive.
After the cleansing of the planet Dangerous Waves, KDY, the Jedi, and thousands of other small companies and organizations helped in the rebuilding of Coruscant. After months of hard work the former Queen of the Core began to resemble its former self. After a year of rebuilding hostilities once again rose between the DJO and Galactic Alliance and Dangerous Waves pulled its support from the reconstruction program as did KDY. By this time the G.A. had once again become self sustainable and continued the reconstruction on its own.
Several months later a small scale attack (in response to the actions of Current Chief of State Xero who banished hundreds of Corellian citizens from the cityworld) by the DJO and Sith was launched against Coruscant. After a few days of heavy fighting the DJO and Galactic Alliance reached a shaky truce and the Sith retreated once more into the darkness of the galaxy. Chief of State Xero resigned from his position and CoS Elloerrs was sworn in. Under the leadership of Elloerrs the reconstruction project was put on hold until the near the end of his resignation.
Finally after two years the reconstruction project of Coruscant was finally completed. This was mostly due in part to Chief of State Aurelian Makilles' push to return Coruscant to its former self. she has since begun a campaign against force users in light of the attacks on Naboo.
Couruscant is currently guarded by and Headquarters the Galactic Alliance Defense Fleet's First Fleet aka the Home Fleet. This includes the Battleship named after the first Chief of State the Cal Omas. This Fleet also patrols the Metellos Trade Route, Daragon Trail, and the galactically northern end of the Hydian Way.
